From the Committee to Elect Bob Jarman

Bob Jarman, elected in November to the six-person San Juan County Council, has filed as a candidate for the countywide three-person Council election representing San Juan Island (Residency Dist. 1). Jarman is running as a non-partisan in the non-partisan race as dictated by the Home Rule Charter, of which he is a strong supporter.

Jarman has lived and worked on San Juan Island for 38 years.  He is uniquely qualified to represent not only San Juan Island, but all islands in the county.  He has been on “every island and gone down every road” as part of his job for over 30 years with the local phone company.  Bob knows and appreciates the demographics of each island and understands the concerns of each island’s citizens.  Bob worked with County Commissioners and Emergency Responders in setting up the 911 and 911E programs in the islands, which included addressing and mapping of all the islands.  He worked with a citizen work group from Lopez and past Commissioner Nielsen to formulate the county’s first cell tower regulations.

Eight years ago Bob was elected a Fire Commissioner for San Juan District 3 and has served continuously since that time.  His ability to work with the Town of Friday Harbor, the County, and the Port, listening to all sides and seeking real solutions, has helped to make the fire department more responsive, efficient and economical for all.  “I am committed to bringing the same type of efficient, realistic solutions to our county’s problems while being a County Councilman” said Jarman.

Jarman understands the need for good paying, local jobs in order to sustain the County’s economy.  “Construction, the wholesale/retail trades, healthcare, farming and real estate sales; all need to be fostered and encouraged while respecting our environment and maintaining our Island Way of Life.  I’ve been a worker and an employer on San Juan Island, and I know how hard it is to make a living.”

Jarman has bettered his community through civic activities.  He helped to bring the first Relay For Life to the island; was involved in the first Dollars For Scholars and served as the youngest board member of the S. J. Co. Senior Council where he was instrumental in getting the construction of the Senior Center finished!

“As I take my seat on the Council this January I will be representing my District, but working for all islanders.  I vow to work hard, be open to citizen input, listen to and work with staff and my fellow Council Members, acting honestly and openly.  I am honored to have been elected to represent my fellow islanders now and, hopefully, in the future!” electbobjarman@gmail.com
