After a Northwest rain, a rainbow appears. For our community, the pot at the end of the rainbow becomes fuller with each blood donation. Your support encourages our local community to step up and donate blood every 56 days. Make your appointment to save a life today.
“I’m the father of a 3yr old who needs bi-weekly transfusions until she can have a stem-cell transplant. If it wasn’t for donors like yourself, she wouldn’t make it to transplant. Thank you so much, our appreciation goes beyond words.”

- Three-year-old girls should be looking for leprechauns and pots of gold on St. Patrick’s Day, not receiving a cancer diagnosis. Jane was diagnosed with a rare kidney cancer that had spread to her lymph nodes, lungs, and spine on St. Patrick’s Day in 2017. Less than a week later, she received two blood transfusions. When friends asked how they could help, the family encouraged people to donate blood and platelets. One third of all blood donations go to patients of all ages fighting cancer. When Jane received a blood transfusion, she called it “super blood.” Today, Jane is now six-years cancer free and officially cured! To celebrate Jane and children like her, make a March donation in her honor! Take a pic and tag #4SweetJane and #bloodworksnw.
- “All across the country, local blood banks are sounding alarms that blood supplies are dangerously low. Some areas are asking even hospitals to postpone elective surgeries. I think of a mom like me waiting to hear if her child would get the transfusion she needs just for a chance to survive. My parents and their generation were regular blood donors, but as they pass away, the next generations are not replacing them. We need to step up. All those who donated in Jane’s honor, if you haven’t donated blood lately, please make an appointment. There’s a Jane out there that needs you. Now. They need you right now.”

- In many disasters and critical need scenarios – like mass shootings, natural disasters, or large-scale accidents, a significant amount of blood is required immediately. However, with widespread blood shortages, most blood centers do not have the blood on the shelves to handle this type of emergency. That’s why Bloodworks Northwest is collecting additional units of blood as part of our on-call status with the Blood Emergency Readiness Corps this month. The blood you donate means we’ll have an emergency shipment ready to rush to a disaster if called upon, without delays or uncertainty. Make an appointment to donate blood today. Together, we can make a difference in the aftermath of a disaster and support our first responders in aiding our community.

Thanks for providing this information, Lin. I guess it has been just about four years since we have been able to donate blood here on Orcas. And now that you can schedule an appointment online, how convenient!
