2022 Daily Docket — Thursday, Oct. 20

Here are some updates from today.

  • As early voting is underway in Arizona, the secretary of state’s office has referred a report of voter intimidation to the Arizona attorney general and U.S. Department of Justice. Right-wing activists in Arizona have called upon volunteers to “monitor” drop boxes.

  • Today, Florida voting rights groups sent a letter to Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) and Secretary of State Cord Byrd (R) asking them to expand hurricane-related voting accommodations to more Florida counties. The order currently only applies to three Republican-leaning counties.

  • Today, CASA (a nonprofit civil rights organization focused on Pennsylvania’s immigrant and Latino communities) filed a lawsuit against the York County, Pennsylvania’s board of elections for its English-only election practices.

  • Today, a Michigan judge issued a decision regarding a Republican request to nullify a set of 2022 rules for partisan elections challengers and poll watchers. The judge concluded that the Michigan secretary of state and director of elections “exceeded their authority with respect to certain provisions in [the] election manual” and ordered them to issue an updated version.

  • Yesterday, a federal judge denied a far-fetched request to ban the use of electronic voting machines and drop boxes throughout Kansas in the upcoming elections.

  • Also yesterday, a Republican legal group appealed Tuesday’s decision that allows Lehigh County, Pennsylvania to use drop boxes without new restrictions.
