Asleep at the Wheel returns to the Orcas Center Saturday, Oct. 23

On Saturday, October 23, Orcas Center will present two performances of the legendary Texas swing band, Asleep at the Wheel. Orcas audiences will remember the band’s first appearance here in July 2006, when they performed two sold-out shows.

With a 40-year track record, 25+ recordings and nine Grammy Awards under their Texas-size belt buckle, the band has enthusiastic fans internationally that span several generations. Asleep at the Wheel has recorded or shared the stage with Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton, Garth Brooks, George Strait, the Dixie Chicks, Dwight Yoakum, Manhattan Transfer and mnay other artists of varying music genres. Keeping alive the tradition of swing made popular by Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys, the band keeps a hectic touring schedule.

Ray Benson is the founder and “front man” of the band. The smooth baritone voice of Benson, who is truly “Texan” in stature at 6’7”, can be heard in national advertising campaigns and radio station imaging. Ray is also an active industry leader, serving as a Trustee of the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences, Chairman of the SIMS Foundation in Austin TX, and member of Board of Directors for several other Austin-based non-profits.

Generous underwriting support for this presentation is provided by Orcas Suites.

Tickets for the first show at 6pm, which include a BBQ supper beginning at 4:30 pm, are $50. Tickets for the second show at 9 pm are $30 and $25 for Orcas Center members.
