ArtSmithBeginning in 2017, each artist selected for Artsmith’s annual artist residency on Orcas island will receive a $50 honorarium to help offset travel costs. The next residency takes place January 2-9.

Five writers, artists, naturalists, and/or scholars selected by our Peer Review Panel will enjoy the comfort of a private room and bath in a beautiful 1907 Arts & Crafts home in Washington State’s San Juan Islands.

Each year Artsmith grants Artist Residency Fellowships of time and space in the San Juan Islands for artists, scholars, and writers to create new works. Up to five fellows at a time stay in individual rooms with private baths as guests of Artsmith and the B&B, and have access to the inn’s amenities, including wireless Internet and our garden hot tub. Being within walking distance of the beach, library, coffee shops, restaurants, galleries, and Darvill’s Bookstore, and only a few miles from Moran State Park and Turtleback Preserve, residents have no shortage of inspirational sustenance.

Provided meals include welcome hors d’oeuvres the night of arrival plus four dinners during the week of the residency. Fellows are responsible for all other meals. Due to health regulations, fellows cannot access the kitchen; however, a small refrigerator, microwave, toaster, and electric kettle are provided, along with glassware, dishes, and utensils. And we take care of the dishes!

Visual artists, please note that Artsmith does not have artist studios, much as we wish we did. As a result, the residency is best-suited for artists who do not require use of a studio. If in doubt, please email us at info@orcasartsmith.org to inquire.

Apply Soon! The deadline is May 31.
