Doubt
— JoEllen Moldoff —
Even if you tricked yourself
into a state of confidence,
Doubt, in her dark cloak,
will still come stalking
and find you, cowering
in the corner, flailing
your broom to chase her away.
And suppose you succeeded—
the dust settled,
leaving no trace
and the figure you imagined
was never in the room?
You were the trick, after all
then the broom,
and now
the trace.

this poem is so simple, so mysterious, so light – so zen – and so true; universal trickster that the mind is.
JoEllen, this really is a great poem…it asks much of me!
Each time I read this poem, I enjoy it more, JoEllen, especially when I read it aloud.
