Interspecies Communication

Last night,
as I was sitting on my deck,
a humming bird,
flew over to me from its feeder
and hovered
four inches from my face.

For many long seconds
the thumb-sized
bronze-green-gray
Calypte anna
looked me in the eye.

Its fierce stare spoke plainly:
“You lazy clod,
you haven’t re-filled my feeder
with fresh nectar in two weeks.
It’s fermented
and I only still drink it
because it gives me
a nice buzz.”

I raised my wine glass and said:
“I am sorry, and you are welcome.”

Anna displayed her tail feathers,
called “tchik tchik tchik
and buzzed off.
