FREE half-day workshop for small businesses and entrepreneurs at Orcas Fire Station from 9:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. The business and financing workshop course material will be presented by James McCafferty, of the Economic Development Association of Skagit County, a management consultant for over a decade.

Wednesday, December 5

Author Michele Dunkerley will discuss her book, Houses Made of Wood and Light , at Darvill’s Bookstore, 6 p.m.. This stunningly-illustrated book explores how Hank Schubart, a West Coast modernist architect, used the ideas of Frank Lloyd Wright to design homes in which nature flows seamlessly into architecture. Dunkerley’s presentation will be enjoyed by anyone who is interested in architecture, photography and Pacific Northwest living.

At the Water’s Edge Lecture, “The Elwha River Dam Removal and Restoration” will be presented as the photographic journey of Eric Kessler. 6-7 p.m. at the Senior Center.

Thursday, December 6

Eastsound Planning Review Committee (EPRC) meeting from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Eastsound Fire Hall. On the agenda: review of plans to expand the Outlook Inn.

Washington State Ferries  public meeting from 5-7 p.m. in the County Council chambers in Friday Harbor at 55 Second St. in Friday Harbor. Two-way video conferencing will be available from the Orcas and Lopez libraries, and this meeting will also be streamed live via the San Juan County website. This meeting is part of a series of fall public meetings conducted by WSF, and will cover the upcoming legislative session including proposed service reductions on our routes, new ferry construction, liquefied natural gas (LNG) as a potential fuel for the fleet, and issues specific to the San Juan Islands.

Orcas school music students will shine this December as they present a trio of concerts throughout the month. All concerts are free and open to the public, although donations are gratefully accepted for the High School concert. The first concert is Thursday, December 6, with a performance by 5th through 8th grades at 7 p.m. in the Orcas School Cafeteria.

Writer’s Roundtable from 1-3 p.m. at the public library. The Roundtable topic for December, “The Gift of Words: A Celebration of Writers and Writing,” will be facilitated by JoEllen Moldoff, who founded Writer’s Roundtable.

The 21st  Annual Candlelight Spiral Walk at 2 p.m. at the Odd Fellows Hall. The entire community is invited to join in this event which will be hosted by the Orcas Montessori School and the Salmonberry School.
