The League of Women Voters of the San Juans (LWV-SJ) doesn’t believe in hibernation. Fresh from their Nov. 18 Health Care Forum and Dec. 5 Annual Luncheon, the League board is creating a program calendar for 2014.
The General Membership meeting will take place from noon to 2 p.m. at the San Juan Library on Monday, January 13. Upcoming local programs will be planned with Sarah Crosby, LWV-SJ Program Chair and Diane Martindale, LWV-SJ President facilitating discussion among the 55-plus registered members. The program meeting will consist of two parts: the first to give input for National programs; and the second to put together the local program calendar for the coming year.
National programs, as described on the national website, www.lwv.org are:
- Protecting and Engaging Voters https://www.lwv.org/issues/protecting-and-engaging-voters
- Reforming Money in Politics https://www.lwv.org/issues/reforming-money-politics
- Defending the Environment https://www.lwv.org/issues/defending-environment
- Gun Safety Learn More https://www.lwv.org/issues/gun-safety
- Improving Government https://www.lwv.org/our-work/improving-government
- Reforming Immigration https://www.lwv.org/issues/reforming-immigration
- Global Democracy https://www.lwv.org/our-work/other-policy-work/global-democracy
- Advancing Health Care https://www.lwv.org/our-work/other-policy-work/health-care
The public is welcome to attend — males included! Please call Diane Martindale at 370-5814 to advise of your attendance.
Also on the agenda for the LWV-SJ membership meeting is a celebration of Carrie Chapman Catt, a founding member of the LWV, who headed the National American Woman Suffrage Association. This group brought to the public’s attention that the work women had done in World War I should be rewarded with recognition of their political equality. (This right was obtained in 1920 when Tennessee became the 36th state to ratify the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution).
