Farm to Table Feast – Children’s House 2010 Culinary Season, 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. at Red Rabbit Farm in Westsound, $75 per person. This year’s Farm-to-Table feast will feature numerous scratch-made courses taking advantage of the freshest, local ingredients our Island has to offer.  Funds raised will benefit Children’s House, an early learning center for Orcas children ages infant through six years old. The first meeting of the OPALCO MORE (Member Owned Renewable Energy) Steering Committee is scheduled for July 8th, 2010, from 10:30 – 12:30 at the Orcas Ferry Landing.  The meeting will take place in the county’s meeting room below the Russell’s Landing Store (10 Killebrew Lake Rd).    The doors will be open at 10 a.m.

Monthly “marketing chat” at the Orcas Island Public Library from noon to 1 p.m., facilitated by Joe Thoron. Perhaps the Northwest’s most widely known chef, Tom Douglas has helped define “Northwest Cuisine,”and won the 1994 James Beard Award for Best Northwest Chef. A few tickets left. The Cancer Support Group at 7 p.m. at Orcas Island Community Church Library is for anyone who has cancer, is a cancer survivor, or is a caretaker for someone with cancer. It is a monthly, no cost, confidential support group to give hope, encouragement, information, and inspiration to those experiencing the difficult journey of cancer. The organizers of the group are Carol and Bogdan Kulminski from the Lighthouse Christian Center, who were facilitators for a group in San Diego, and Sue Foulk from the Orcas Island Community Church, who is a cancer survivor. Artist and author Betty Reynolds will read and sign her new book, An Artist’s Journey to Bali: the Island of Art, Music, and Mystery, a cultural exploration into the mysterious and colorful Indonesian island of Bali, at Darvill’s Bookstore at 7 p/m.

David Lindley at the Orcas Center, 7:30 p.m. Lindley is a prolific musician, having played with Jackson Browne, Bob Dylan, Rod Stewart, Linda Rondstadt among others. Scratch basics of computer animation for kids. Free. Kids will learn how to create, design, and animate a character and can then share their creation to the Scratch website.  Scratch is developed by the Lifelong Kindergarten research group at the MIT Media Lab. 10:30 a.m. to noon at the Orcas Island Library meeting room.  Laptop computers will be provided and class size is limited to 5 students. Students must be at least 8 years of age and familiar with very basic computer use. Signup at the Library is required prior to the workshop date, and there is no charge for the workshop. 376-4985.

Indian Island Marine Health Observatory Field Research Days
Join local scientists and community volunteers at Eastsound Waterfront Park in conducting surveys of fish and intertidal animals on low tide days during the spring and summer.  Wear appropriate footwear for walking to the island (wet sand, gravel, shallow water), and come on down to the beach!11:30 a.m. until the tide comes in.

Writers Roundtable The Art of Revision – Learn techniques to bring out the best in your writing, removing dampening language, and making the work shapely and vivid. Bring pieces written during the June Writer’s Roundtable, or other pieces you’d like to polish. We’ll revise, then share. 1 to 3 p.m. at the Orcas Island Library. All are welcome.

Museum Gala at the Orcas Center, to benefit the Orcas Historical Museum’s “Journey Stories” Exhibit, which opens July 17.Underwritten by the Anders Foundation, with all proceeds going towards the Museum. The evening will begin at 5:30 PM with a delicious light supper, wine included, in the Madrona Room. Bill and Valerie Anders will each speak on their life journeys at 7:30 p.m..Dessert and coffee in the Madrona Room follows. Silent auction included.
