Sunday, September 23 at 11 a.m.  at the West Sound Community Club

Mike Hurwicz and Sharon Abreu will be doing a 20-minute presentation about BePeace, a n internationalprogram for teaching peace, for the Orcas Unitarian Universalist Fellowship this Sunday. The service starts at 11 am and ends at about noon.

The couple, who are well-known musicians and environmental activists, recently became certified to teach the BePeace Course; they will also be playing music at the service.

BePeace is a practice that combines a scientifically tested method for “feeling peace”, with a clear path for “speaking peace” that creates an authentic, compassionate connection. As we learn this practice, we are empowered to pass it on, to “teach peace”.

BePeace is taught to graduate students from many different countries at the United Nations University for Peace, where they receive 2 credits for the Foundations Course. This course was also offered to 38 representatives from 10 countries at the 2009 Summit of the Global Alliance of Ministries and Departments for Peace. BePeace has been initiated in many states in the USA, where it is one of the courses in the certificate program of the National Peace Academy. It has also been offered in Japan, Canada, Europe, and Central America.

This program has been taught widely in schools in Costa Rica since 2004 and is now moving into the United States. Rasur Foundation International aims to train teachers and counselors in BePeace® so these individuals can pass on the practice to students and parents in their school community. Offering the BePeace® program in schools equips students, teachers and parents with the skills to resolve conflicts in a mutually satisfying manner and provides life skills for making positive choices that enrich life.

“We believe that to become more peaceful nations we must begin within ourselves and that teaching our children is the logical first step to shifting generational violence into lasting peace,” says Abreu.
