Anyone else surprised by the appearance of the old Washington Federal Savings sign at the intersection of North Beach Road and Main Street this morning?
An alert reader snapped this photo and emailed it to theOrcasonian with the following comment: “Seeing the old Washington Federal sign gave me a warm fuzzy feeling from when I moved here in 2000.”

Obvious question: Why is the sign there now?
Hmmm. Wonder if it has anything to do with the gentleman I observed this morning, inspecting the Brown Bear sign? Some sort of wooden sign revival, I suspect!
The sign was there the whole time. We just couldn’t see it.
I took a picture this morning myself… a neat blast from the past.
Whoa! That’s big! I mean it’s a good bank
and all, but … that’s big!
This reminds me of the unfortunate path that my gorgeous sign for Vessel Gallery of Contemporary American Ceramics took, after I closed the Pennsylvania shop just before the recession of 2008 really hit. The landlord of the quaint set of “shoppes” had a sort of graveyard of the signage of his past tenants. He nailed my large and beautiful sign to one of the old outbuildings in the rear of the complex, to join others like Bigoney’s Flowers and Valley Healthfoods and you name it. I tried to convince him that it wasn’t good advertising to show how poorly shops did in his complex. But hey, he was always happy to rent a space to the next bright-eyed retailer without a clear business plan!
It gave several of us a moment of panic! I trust the bakery will remain?
