Saturday, July 28, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., Emmanuel Episcopal Church

— from Joanne Cundy —

The 78th Annual Market Day Sale will take place on the last Saturday in July on the
Emmanuel church grounds. Everyone is welcome to the sale, July 28 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The Ladies of The St Agnes Guild will be busy sorting and pricing donations which will later be found on table after table for sale day. Treasures for perusal and delight.  Baked goods, books and children’s toys, housewares and jewelry just to name a few.

The church was built in 1885 on property deeded to the Episcopal congregation by Charles Shattuck who later became Eastsound’s first post master and Justice of the Peace, according to church history.

The St Agnes Guild was initially formed in the 1930s to raise funds to refurbish the church building and during the war years, to also send money to World funds such as the Red Cross.

The very first Market Day Sale was held in 1940, and continues today in order to provide needed funds for the Orcas nonprofits that benefit Orcas island adults and children. In 2017, $7,750 was donated to island nonprofits.

The church buildings are used by the community year round for classes, recovery programs, lectures, and SeaDoc, as an example, and meeting space for other faiths within our community. These are just some of the varied uses and 2018 will be a year for some sale funds to go towards refurbishing as well.

We will again be serving the Silver Tea throughout the day and also having our hotdog stand. So please join us for lunch and a very joyful day full of the tradition of giving.
