Saturday, March 30, 7 p.m., Orcas Grange

— from Mandy Troxel —

For the very first time, Internationally acclaimed pianist Radoslav Lorkovic (www.radoslavlorkovic.com) will be performing in the San Juans. Rad has toured with Odetta, Greg Brown, Jimmy LeFave, Ronny Cox, Ellis Paul, and Shawn Mullins (to name a few). Prepare for an unforgettable evening of blues-Croation-Americana-classical-jazz music and stories. He is like nothing you’ve heard before – accomplished, intuitive, gentle, multi-faceted, witty, twinkle-in-his-eye, and genuinely interested in creating a performance for his audience that will be remembered for years.

Born in Zagreb, Yugoslavia, Rad hails from a musically and academically talented family, who had the good fortune to move to London when he was 5, then to Minnesota a year later. Three years later they ended up in Iowa, where his father became a renowned neurophysiologist-academician. With a grandmother who was the premier pianist of Yugoslavia and great-grandfather who conducted eastern European symphonies, he was a classical prodigy. Then, as a teenager in Iowa City, he discovered the Top 40 and the Blues. Rad’s life has integrated and honed his musical passion into a fine lifestyle and art form.

A highly sought after festival and internationally touring ‘sideman’, he also writes and performs his own songs, all tied up in his prowess on the piano (and accordion!). He is a fabulous story-teller who regales his audiences with his life, family heritage, world adventures exploring life and love. His personal experiences span the Cold War, Iron Curtain, Academia, Blues, Carnegie Hall, Woody Guthrie Tribute tour, specialty music cruise ship tours, recording sessions in the US and abroad and Garrison Keillor’s A Prairie Home Companion

He’ll be performing twice in the San Juan Islands. Suggested Donation is $15-20. RSVPs are helpful. Please contact: houseconcertsandsuch@gmail.com.  Review of Radoslav’s Clear and Cold CD re-release:

The album is an intimate affair and the newfound clarity allows the listener to nestle in closely to the long ringing piano notes and Lorković’s softly soulful and impassioned vocal delivery. Clear and Cold has always been an essential album in my collection—one that transcends the time and place in which it was released. —Michael Roeder of littlevillagemag.com
