— from Eric Webb, Superintendent —
I want to extend my gratitude to the Orcas Island community for their overwhelming support to renew our expiring educational levy. Orcas Island residents never cease to amaze me with their demonstrations of generosity for our schools. While the final tally is pending, the returns indicate approval by the voters of Orcas Island. The most recent results indicate a passage of 71%!
The passage of this replacement Maintenance & Operations Levy for Orcas Island Public Schools will provide approximately 25% of our overall district budget, which funds teacher salaries, music programs, athletics, staff training, classified staff salaries, ELL programs, special education, and other programs that are vital to the success of the Orcas Island School District. This is not a new or additional tax; it simply continues the existing levy that was originally approved by voters in 2012.
The passage of this levy reminds all of us of this community’s passion for education and student learning. You, as a community, have consistently expressed a great desire to provide children with the best educational foundation and the necessary tools to lead a successful and fulfilling life. You have also sent a powerful message to Orcas Island School teachers and staff that you are strong supporters of the important work that they do each day.
I am proud to be a part of a community of advocates and supporters of quality education for Orcas Island children. Your faith and confidence in our school district is humbling.
Thank you for your support of the levy and always putting children first,

I second this thank you. I am not only on the board of Four Winds Camp, I am an Orcas Island school board member. Senator Ranker is a champion for the needs of children. We should applaud his tireless efforts in education, or wherever children’s interests are at stake.
I appreciate the listing of the educational enrichment programs funded by the levy, formally named as the Maintenance & Operations Levy.
Given our recent multi million dollar investment in our school’s capital facilities, much of which was essential as a consequence of a long history of neglect and lack of maintenance, I for one would very much appreciate some assurance that our current OISD budgeting allocates adequate funding to ensure our school buildings enjoy a long and useful life.
