The Island Sinfonia is presenting its Mother’s Day spring concert at 3 p.m. at the Orcas Center.  The program will feature Symphony No. 8 by Franz Schubert and Symphony No. 9 (first movement) by Franz Schubert, and The Quiet City by Aaron Copland.  Admission is $10 through the Orcas Center box office.  A wine and cheese reception following the concert is included in the price.  Call Karen Blinn at 376-6579.

Investing Local. The Orcas Island Community Foundation is hosting a discussion led by Charlie Anderson, Chair of the San Juan Island Community Foundation. “Sex Education in the School: What is Taught and When?” at the PTSA meeting.  School administration, teachers and counselors on the focus topic-with plenty of opportunity for questions and comments.  5:30-7:00 in the school library.

Also on the agenda will be selection of the parent representatives to the newly forming Orcas School Site Council.  The PTSA has been authorized to select four parents — four from the general school population and one from OASIS/ALE — to comprise the parent representation on the site council.  Those interested in serving on the site council, are asked to contact Barb Skotte at bskotte@yahoo.com as soon as possible.

PTSA Family Movie Night! Join family and friends and enjoy Disney Pictures’ “Bolt”, featuring the vocal talents of John Travolta and Miley Cyrus. 7 p.m., School Cafeteria. Suggested Donation: $5 per family (but no one will be turned away for lack of $s) The popcorn is free, and the first 25 families and/or persons contributing at least $5 will also receive a $5 gift card useable at the National PTA’s online DVD store.

Canoe Island Yoga Weekend from Friday, May 15  to Sunday, May 17).
Morning and evening yoga classes, then sail, kayak, swim in the heated pool, play tennis, hike or just relax on Canoe Island.  Do as much or as little as you choose.  This weekend is a scholarship fundraiser with $55 of the $215 tuition going to the CIFC Scholarship Fund.  Limited to 25 participants.  Ages: 16 and up.  Costs: $215 per person (all inclusive, 3 meals a day, use of island activities equipment, lodging, transportation from Orcas ferry landing to Canoe Island). College Essay Workshop at the Funhouse Two day workshop focusing on writing the college application essay, Saturday, May 16; 9 am – 10:30 a.m. and Sunday, May 17 – 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.)
Advanced sign-ups for these sessions are required, with preference given to current Juniors.  The cost to participate is $20 for Funhouse members, and $35 for Non-Members. Orcas Island Prevention Partnership Annual Meeting. 5 p.m. at the Orcas Center. A Farm to Community evening meal, followed by a performance from internationally known NW Native American violinist, Swil Kanim.  Afterwards, he and Michael Mele will facilitate a short community forum on “Bringing Together Community – empowering ourselves in mindful ways”. Donations accepted to benefit the Prevention Partnership – optional childcare will be provided during the community forum.
