In recognition of Poetry Month, and to celebrate our treasure trove of Orcas Island poets, Orcas Issues is pleased and honored to offer daily poetry during April.

THE SEARCH
by Nancy Reas

This was an exercise in taking eight random words from a poem, then using them in a new eight-line poem without too much planning or critique from one’s inner editor.

What is it that sings in the forest nearby?
Filaments of sound float on the air.
The music of the depths
cause us to turn in our paths.
We creatures pine for another’s soul,
few find it,
that brilliant stab of joy that opens the heart
then rests on a nearby branch for just a few seconds.
