The Airhawks Flying Club has awarded three $4,500 Flight Training scholarships to Orcas High School students Jack Carson, Knox Key and Sophia Mahony-Jauregui. In addition to their normal school courses, they have now added a number of additional STEM subjects they must master to successfully complete the FAA written Ground School test.
Their online and classroom courses will include: theory of flight, aircraft systems, weight and balance, flight maneuvers, weather, instrument flight, night flight, navigation, GPS navigation, radio communication, emergency procedures, new technology, medical restrictions, airspace/airways and FAA regulations. They also have to learn a new “aviation” language. They are going to be busy!
Their actual Flight Training will start in the Spring/Summer when longer, sunny days and better weather conditions are available that are more conducive to initial flight Training.
Their Certified Flight Instructors and other Club Members will be there to support and assist them all the way through their training as they learn to operate in a three-dimensional world.
Airhawks Flying Club is a qualified non-profit organization. These scholarships are only possible because of donations from our community.
