Saturday, May 26 from 8:30 to 12:30 p.m. at the Odd Fellows Hall
In the interest of giving back to the community, a group of clean and sober islanders have planned a dance for all ages at Odd Fellows Hall on Saturday, May 26 from 8:30 pm – 12:30am. Everyone is invited.
“The idea came to me that there are not enough activities for people who may want to be in a sober environment,” said Sharon Collins, dance creator and organizer. “I wanted to give back to the community that has supported me and others who have struggled with addiction, to say thank you. Sometimes people think that those who do not drink or use drugs don’t have any fun, but we know better.”
“The recovery community on Orcas Island is surprisingly large and supportive. This dance is not an AA-sponsored event. Many people become clean and sober in other ways, and are also involved in helping with the dance. We hope by conducting this dance, we will make others more aware of clean and sober options, and provide a “thank you” to members of the community.”
In addition, the committee organizing the dance wanted to provide an activity for all ages, so that families, teens, seniors, and guests from off-island could participate. Donations to cover costs of the dance will be accepted at the door, but no one will be turned away for lack of funds.
The group has gathered favorite dance tunes from many genres and time periods: jazz, disco, country, pop and even a few surprise tunes are in the eclectic DJ mix. “The sound system at Odd Fellows is great,” said Collins. The system has been gradually upgraded the past couple of years, according to Jay Kimball, Odd Fellows building manager.
Refreshments will be for sale at the dance for a nominal fee, and any proceeds from the dance will be turned over to community supporters of the event. “The local community has been very excited about this dance, and many have donated money or in-kind services and supplies,” said Collins.
Community supporters include: Full Circle Counseling, DVSAS, Orcas Medical Center, San Juan County Human Services, Orcas Island Family Medicine, OIPP, Island Market, Office Cupboard, Mary Nash (LMFT), Orcas Family Health Center, Rachel Newcombe (LICSW), Chimayo/Sazio and Orcas Animal Protection Society.
