Sign up now for Sept. 29 Cookoff Competition

While Wikipedia tells us that chili can refer to food, people, fictional characters or places, Jim Biddick of the Lions Club knows that everybody likes to eat chili and so organized a Chili Cookoff. And while the dish is often prepared with meat (con carne) or with cheese (con queso) the spicy fruit of plants in the genus Capsicum — chilis — provide the namesake ingredient.

The cookoff is on Saturday September 29 from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. under the tent on the Village Green. Sponsored by The Lions Club, The Orcas Island Farmers Market, Kiwanis, and Orcas Island Family Connections, the Chili Cookoff is open to all. Competitors need to act quickly to sign up for this event, which is limited to only 10 teams. The cost for teams to enter is $35.

When event ticket holders pay $10, they each receive 10 two-ounce samples. There will be a beer garden with beverages provided by The Lower Tavern. There will be a a small cash prize for first, second and third place  winners, who will be selected by the public. Each attendee gets 10 votes which they can cast to whom ever they choose.

The purpose of this fundraiser is to fundraiser is being held to benefit the annual giving tree program that provides toys, games and books for island children and teens during the holiday. In recent years, the giving tree has been underfunded, and Biddick organized the Chili Cookoff to address this need.
