From Kevin O’Brien, Orcas Fire and Rescue Chief

On Sunday, May 27th at 8:51 p.m. 22 emergency responders and 9 units from Orcas Island Fire and Rescue responded to a house fire in the Sunderland Road neighborhood near the Orcas Golf Club for the report of smoke and flames in a home.  Firefighters arrived to find a small vacation cabin involved in a roof and ceiling fire.  The fire was immediately extinguished limiting the damage to a small portion of the roof, ceiling and interior walls.

Guests to the island were staying in the home at the time and immediately called 911. A garden hose was used by one of the guests to initially suppress the fire; however, he was unable to continue efforts due to the smoke from the fire. The man was evaluated, treated and released by OIFR for complications from minor smoke inhalation.  Further medical evaluation was not needed.

The owner of the cottage was able to relocate the guests to another accommodation.

The fire is currently under investigation by the San Juan County Fire Marshall.
